Sept. 22, 11:30 a.m., Neumann Auditorium Dr. Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, is the author of Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Reform in Liberal Education and is currently at work on Not For Profit: Liberal Education and Democratic Citizenship. Dr. Nussbaum is an American philosopher with particular interest in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, political philosophy, and ethics. She will speak on celebrating the liberal arts.
Nov. 17, 11:30 a.m., McCaskey Lyceum Dr. Brent Waters of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Illinois is the author of From Human to Posthuman: Christian Theology and Technology in a Postmodern World (2006), and he will speak on the intersection of technology and religion when efforts are made to transform human identity. His visit to Wartburg is supported by a generous grant from the Metanexus Institute.
March 2, 11:30 a.m., McCaskey Lyceum Dr. Birgit Brock-Utne is a professor at the University of Oslo’s Institute for Educational Research, and is serving as a Visiting Lecturer at Wartburg during Winter Term 2010 through a grant from the American Scandinavian Foundation. She is an internationally recognized scholar of peace studies and peace education, and has served as a consultant around the world. She will speak on peace and international development.
March 23, 11:30 a.m., Neumann Auditorium Dr. James Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City and adjunct professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. Dr. Hansen is a climatology researcher who has testified before congress on climate change and developed global climate models. He appeared on 60 Minutes where he described efforts by the Bush Administration to edit his climate-related press releases. He will speak on the science and politics of climate change.
