Earn
a $1,000 Award
The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) has an exciting opportunity
for you to serve the community and earn a $1000 education award.
By becoming a CCE Fellow,
Wartburg students will enroll as part-time AmeriCorps members. Each
part-time member will complete 300 hours of service over the course
of the academic year. Upon successful completion of the program, each
student would receive a $1,000 educational voucher from the Federal
government to use toward payment of student loans, tuition, or graduate
school.
The CCE is offering a menu
of options to students for how they can complete the 300 hours. For
instance, if you complete an internship with a non-profit organization
for one credit (which involves 140 hours as part of that internship)
those hours would be subtracted off the 300 hour total. Completing the
class Leadership Theories and Practice (ID 315) and working with the
Community Builders program will count for 40 hours. Additionally, participating
in a Winter/Fall/Tour week service trip would count for another 20-50
hours. Moreover, completing Wartburg classes that involve service-learning
projects as part of the curriculum, individual volunteerism activities,
and hours structured through working with local school systems (tutoring,
mentoring, facilitating activities) would count as well. In addition,
up to 60 hours of reflective activities can also be included, and several
opportunities will be available for students to learn more about themselves,
our community and American society.
Ultimately, students need
to complete 300 total hours over the course of a calendar year (beginning
September 1, 2007) to receive the $1,000 award. However, over the course
of a student’s lifetime you can only get two of these awards so
they need to be used cautiously.
